A message from tournament founder and director Steve R:

As we entered the final day of the first ever Softball Summer Slam, everything to that point had somehow miraculously come together.  From getting the field permits, to the insurance, the weather (not a single game rained out), umpires at every game, fields in great shape, great games and volunteers coming together to all help out it was a true team effort. And then there was today…after all my planning and hard work, I find myself in the hospital most of the day with back pain so excruciating that my wife had to call an ambulance to get me there.  But through my texting and a great group of dads, led by Dave G, the day went on without a hitch (thank you - Dave G, Mike H, Ken K, Ross P, Ken H, Dave E, Anthony C).  The Hawks showed that this tournament was not only about the girls getting in some extra games and having fun, it was also about showing true Plainview Pride.  How else can you explain 7 dads being out on the JFK field today, raking, grooming, lining and wetting down the field (5 hoses were connected to Larry’s water line and dragged over the fence in order to wet down the field) to get it in perfect shape for the final two games of the tournament.  And then, once the games began, even though Plainview was already eliminated, having an incredible turnout from the Hawks 8U team to cheer on the players and watch some great softball (see attached pictures).  The trophies were handed out by the Plainview 8U Hawks to each winning player, which gave the Hawks a great sense of participation in the event.

Every manager I came in contact with over the past few days, made it their business to tell me what a great tournament this was, how much fun they and their girls were having, and how great it was to still be playing in mid-August.

I know I have thanked all of you many times already, but the last one is the biggest of them all – THANK YOU.  It couldn’t have been as successful and gone as smoothly (once we got started) as it did without all of your help.  I do hope that this can become an annual 8U event and maybe expand it to 10U down the road.

8U Hawks Win Summer Slam Baseball Title

Playing 5 games in 6 day, the Hawks dominated, outscoring their opponents 55-9. The pitching, fielding and hitting were all tremendous. The Hawks won all 3 games in pool play followed by an extra inning semi-final battle against HBQVB. Timely hitting and terrific defense kept the game at 3-3 after 6 inning. In the 8 Inning battle Plainview’s pitching kept HBQVB in check enabling the Hawks to win in the 8th, sending them to the championship against the LI Redman. In the championship game the Hawks jumped out to an early lead in the first scoring 3 runs. Andrew L had a lead off double, followed by hits by Mike D, Ryan T. Asher B and a Sac fly by Liam S.  In the second inning, they added 2 more runs, featuring a 2 out hit by Zach W, to blow the game open.  In the 3rd the Hawks added 3 more with hits by Mike D, Asher B, and Ryan F.  The pitching was great with Nate S and Mike D dominating, pitching 3 innings each, leading to a 9-2 victory. Congratulations to the boys and their coaches

Congratulations to all the teams that participated and made this a great tournament. Thank you also to the ground crews at the Town parks for getting the fields ready for play despite the weather
